Decorating Biscuits

Hey,

Today at rainbows we had a change of plans as for some reason the guide dogs couldn’t come in as originally planned, so we went with decorating biscuits and who doesn’t love that.

So, like I said, they decorated biscuits which involved me and a mum, who was a volunteer for this week’s meeting, making icing sugar in 4 different bowls, one for each table. Then helping them spread the icing and covering the biscuits in sprinkles and stars. This obviously meant a lot of clearing to do afterwards but oh well they enjoyed themselves and so did I.

Once everyone had finished we played a game with them where is groups they took it in turns, in the group, to run to the other side of the room and pick up a piece of a puzzle, however it would have to be of the colour of your team (on the other side of the piece), and the game would end when one team has completed the puzzle. While they played this game, I was in the kitchen washing up the bowls and cutlery.

To finish we stood and did show and tell which we were unable to do at the beginning of this week’s meeting and then we sang the closing song before making sure each rainbow had what they came with as well as the biscuits.

Once the meeting was over, I cleaned the tables before walking home, which was quite nice as the lovely yet odd weather we had been having recently. I also met and spoke to two of my friends as well as being wished happy birthday for tomorrow, on my way home which was nice. I also met a swan who look beautiful.

Again, I have no pictures but this time it’s my fault as I forgot to take any photos. Sorry about that.

Father's Day

Hey,

Sorry for the late post but anyway . . .

The week just gone at Rainbows involved a lot of cutting as we were doing a craft. I am sure you all know what this Sunday is, and if you don’t, you better be quick to get your dad something as Father’s day is right around the corner, like literally it’s in less than 2 days.

So, if you haven’t guess what we did, I will enlighten you, we made father’s day cards which was loads of fun. We made cards with ties on created out of different materials and a message inside.

Sorry no photo’s but can’t ruin the surprise for the dad’s.

I have helped the Rainbows with their cards for dads but what am I meant to do . . .

Oh well, will just have to think of something

Hope you enjoyed and thanks for reading

30 Years

Hey,

Today was the first day back at helping out at Rainbows since I have been home from Plymouth. Obviously, this is the Rainbows in Kenilworth that I used to be a Young Leader at before I travelled to Plymouth for University ‘10th Kenilworth Rainbows'.

This year we are celebrating 30 years since Rainbows started, so today was the beginning of working towards to 30th anniversary badge.

We showed them a printed paper of the 4 promise badges that Rainbows have had throughout these 30 years, and then gave out sheets that have the outline of the badges for them to colour in.

The 4 badges were:

The original Rainbow Promise badge created in 1987 when rainbows began, was a triangular cloth badge, featuring a Rainbow under a Guide Badge.  It was sewn against the neckline of the tabard, with the upper point of the triangle meant to touch against the binding on the top edge of the tabard.

It was then changed before 1997, to fit in with the other section promise badges, and was a yellow trefoil on green - again a cloth badge, as it was considered unsafe for Rainbows to have metal badges.

In 2008, A metal badge was introduced with a sky blue background, to match the new Rainbow uniforms which were brought in,

but it didn't last for long before the current Promise badge was introduced.

Here is a link to the website I used to find out about the history of Rainbows

Once they had finish the colouring there was then a word search to complete, and if they didn’t finish they could complete it at home to then bring back next week.

I enjoyed helping out again as a Young Leader. Although, not knowing any names since everyone I knew is now in Brownies was difficult and fun to work around.

Easter Egg Hunt

Hey,

So a few weeks ago at Rainbows was the last week before Easter Break, so naturally, the session was all about Easter.

Using the Easter baskets the children had made the week before they had to go on an egg hunt,
obviously chocolate eggs but some hidden in plastic eggs and there were also chicks to find. It was quite funny because whenever there were no more to find the leaders would say that they didn’t have any and the Rainbows were nice enough to give us some which we then ran and hid in the hall or garden depending on where the children were.

This lasted the entire night and was really fun and hey who needs to go to the gym when you can just run around hiding chocolate Easter eggs.

Thanks for Reading and enjoy your Easter Break

New Rainbows

Hey,

Sorry, it’s been a while but was having trouble figuring out what to write about, well until I remembered that I have just started helping out at a new Rainbows down here in Plymouth.

So as I have said, A few weeks ago I started helping out at Rainbows, I know I’m late again. I used to be a Young Leader at Rainbows back home in Kenilworth and still go back and help out when I am back home. Since I started university I haven’t helped out due to the change of location and not joining a Rainbows unit in Plymouth, but not anymore.

It is amazing how in the same countries you can have so many different cultures and how different guiding can be when you have only traveled about 4 hours via train away. I have only been to 2 sessions in Plymouth so I can’t really compare it to the Rainbows in Kenilworth as I was there for 3 years.

However, there are some things that are obviously different. For example, how they open and end the session: In Kenilworth the meeting is started by getting in a circle and signing the song ‘I can sing a rainbow’ and then end in a different song to say good night; whereas in Plymouth the start the same way by everyone getting into a circle but the sing a different song ‘Good evening friend Rainbow’ and then they end with the same song to say good night.

The promise is also done differently in the rainbows in Plymouth to back home. As Brownies starts right after Rainbows finished they have both Brownies and Rainbows there similarly to Kenilworth but Plymouth does the promise for both kids promising for Rainbows and Brownies. They also use the toadstool which I haven’t seen being used since I was a Brownie which was like 13 years ago.

Kenilworth Rainbows also seem to plan the whole term whereas Plymouth Rainbows have a plan but it’s up to the children what they want to do, But hey love them both. Just means I have another set of name to learn but oh well should be fun.
